The buildings to be expanded are mostly between 50 and 150 years old and the available plans are almost always from a bygone era. The planning documents are mostly plans for submission or execution and show the target state as opposed to the current state. The problem is that, in those days, discrepancies in the decimetre range were common in construction. Accurate knowledge of the existing building geometry is important especially with regard to the high pre-fabrication level of steel or timber frame constructions in attic conversions. This is the only way to pre-emptively avoid expensive surprises arising from planning mistakes over the course of a conversion.

Compared with the "Gründerzeit" (a period of rapid industrial expansion in Germany and Austria from 1850 to 1914), it is now possible to map the current state of a building or roof structure with hitherto unknown efficiency and attention to detail thanks to precise measuring instruments, measuring methods and regression analyses. A laser scanner makes all the difference. The scanner records complex geometries and maps them in precise 3D pointclouds at up to one million points per second. Afterwards, only the desired sections and views need to be defined, or a 3D CAD model created. It can be that easy.
